What Is Blackjack?
Blackjack is one of the most widely played card games in both land-based and online casinos. The objective is straightforward: beat the dealer by getting a hand value closer to 21 without going over. Despite its simple premise, blackjack rewards players who understand the rules and apply consistent decision-making.
Understanding Card Values
Before you place a bet, you need to know what each card is worth:
- Number cards (2–10): Worth their face value.
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): Each worth 10 points.
- Ace: Worth 1 or 11 — whichever benefits your hand most.
A "blackjack" (also called a natural) is when your first two cards are an Ace and a 10-value card. This typically pays 3:2 at most tables.
How a Round Works
- Place your bet before cards are dealt.
- Two cards are dealt to you face-up, and two to the dealer — one face-up, one face-down (the "hole card").
- You make a decision based on your hand and the dealer's visible card.
- The dealer reveals their hole card and draws according to fixed rules.
- Winnings are paid or bets are collected.
Your Core Decisions
Hit
Request another card. You can hit as many times as you like, but going over 21 means you "bust" and lose automatically.
Stand
Keep your current hand and end your turn. The dealer then plays out their hand.
Double Down
Double your original bet and receive exactly one more card. This is usually most advantageous when you hold a total of 9, 10, or 11.
Split
If your first two cards are a pair, you can split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet. Splitting Aces and 8s is generally recommended.
Surrender
Some variants allow you to fold your hand and recover half your bet. This is useful when your hand is statistically weak against the dealer's upcard.
Dealer Rules
The dealer follows strict, predetermined rules — they don't make judgment calls. In most games, the dealer must:
- Hit on any total of 16 or less.
- Stand on any total of 17 or more (some variants require a hit on "soft 17").
